WEEK 33

Joseph:  Feb 20th

BTW at Zone conference a couple weeks ago Elder Brown and I were privileged to have a special dinner with President and Sister Msane. Basically if we Memorize a poem called "the Race" we get to have dinner (along with our companions) with President, and i was able to memorize it and recited it at zone conference.

We went to a place called Crown Plaza which has a buffet and is VERY nice, it was a nice break from being out in the bush all the time. I loved it Especially my smoothie which was called "Rocket Fuel" and was a mix of pineapple and lime and something eles i think. I also had a Raspberry for the first time in Kenya, i forgot how good those taste.

from left to right: Elder Noel (from western washington), Elder Ellis (from utah i think), Elder Odhiambo (kenya), Sister Msane, President Msane, Elder Pavik (california) Elder Brown (Arizona) Elder M-somthing (oops i forgot, but hes from kenya) and last is me!

WEEK 32

MOM"S COMMENTARY Feb 19

We have included the Kenya Drought victims in our prayers and Grandma Butters is also and wants reports back to see if our prayers in there behalf is working..

Have you tried any noodles?
Are your primary kids getting baptized.  How are things going with your companion.  Did your other investigators make it to church yet?  Questions, questions.

Story of the week....I was at Winco and the lady in front of me had this HUGE bag of dates.  She was black and dresssed in bright clothes.  I was curious and asked her if she was making something with them or just eats them.  She had a hard time understanding me so I spoke slowly gestering with my hands.  She said, "just eat".  I asked where she was from and she said , "East Africa".  I got excited and said I have a son on a mission in Kenya.  She said, "me Kenya."  I said you were in Kyambeke and she couldn't understand so I tried Kalunga Hills.  That she recognized but pronounced it way different.  Then when I said Kyambeke again she repeated it correctly.  then asked "Vacation".  So I said no Church missionary, again.  She tried to tell me where she was from but had to pay and then I had to get  my food.  She did turn before leaving with the biggest smile.  It made you not seem so very far away at all.

Weekly Quote: ( It comes an assignment to read all of section D & C 76. )
76:22-24 Was printed up and spread separately  in tracts as a missionary tool.  Wilford Woodruff upon reading it stated that it was "the greatest revelation ever recorded by man on earth. "
And although he had not yet met Joseph Smith it mattered not to him whether he was tall or short, young or old, long haired or clean shaven, he knew that the man who bore testimony in this revelation  was a prophet of God.

Have a great week.
Love you exceeding abundantly!

Week 31

MOM'S COMMENTARY: Feb 12

So I've attached the best udon recipe that I could find and also my Mom's egg noodle recipe.  These are a lot easier and quicker.  Put them in any broth and bring them to a boil it makes a great noodle with gravy. Add some veggies and you have a meal.  I also attached an easy fry bread recipe if you can find baking powder and lots of oil.  I seem to remember that you like this.   Top with sugar and cinnamon or honey or fruit if you have any.  Let me know if you want anything else and good luck Chef Joseph.
WEEKLY QUOTE:  Works of … Magnitude and Grandeur
“The work of the Lord in these last days, is one of vast magnitude and almost beyond the comprehension of mortals. Its glories are past description, and its grandeur unsurpassable. It is the theme which has animated the bosom of prophets and righteous men from the creation of the world down through every succeeding generation to the present time; and it is truly the dispensation of the fullness of times, when all things which are in Christ Jesus, whether in heaven or on the earth, shall be gathered together in Him, and when all things shall be restored, as spoken of by all the holy prophets since the world began; for in it will take place the glorious fulfilment of the promises made to the fathers, while the manifestations of the power of the Most High will be great, glorious, and sublime. …
“… The work which has to be accomplished in the last days is one of vast importance, and will call into action the energy, skill, talent, and ability of the Saints, so that it may roll forth with that glory and majesty described by the prophet; and will consequently require the concentration of the Saints, to accomplish works of such magnitude and grandeur” (History of the Church, 4:185–86).

Handmade Udon NoodlesRecipe adapted from Harumi’s Japanese Home Cooking, by Harumi Kurihara

4 teaspoons salt
8 ounces (1 cup) warm water
2 1/2 cups unbleached bread flour
1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
bread flour, for dusting (in step 6)

1. Add the salt to the warm water and stir until it has dissolved.  Put the bread flour and all-purpose flour in a large bowl, and whisk the flours together.
2. Pour the salty water into the bowl with the flour.  Using your hands, mix the flour and water together lightly until the mixture is crumbly.  Pull the dough up from the bottom of the bowl and press down, and repeat until the flour and water are well combined and a rough ball is formed.
3. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead it forcefully on a board for 5-10 minutes until the dough has smoothed out and a lumpy ball is formed.
4. Transfer the dough to a large plastic ziploc bag, and then wrap the bag in a thick towel.  Put it on the floor and walk on it with flat feet (not just the heel).  Turn as you walk, so that all the dough gets flattened.  When the dough feels flat, remove the dough from the bag and roll it out.  Then fold it up, put it back into the bag and repeat the process. The should become more and more smooth with each repeat.  Repeat 3 or 4 times.  On the last repeat, leave the dough in the bag, wrapped in the towel, and let it rest for 3 to 4 hours (during the winter, leave it in a warm place).
5. When the dough is done resting, take it out of the bag, reshape it into a ball, then return it to the bag and walk on it one last time.  Try to spread the dough with your feet, turning around 360 degrees.
6. Dust your work surface with a bit of bread flour, then place the flattened dough on top and roll it out, working from the middle out.  Rotate the dough 45 degrees and repeat until the dough is about 1/8-inch thick, and approximately a rectangle measuring about 1 foot wide by at least 1 1/2 feet long.*
7. Dust the top of the dough with bread flour and then fold it into thirds.  Using a long sharp knife, cut the dough into 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch thick ribbons.  If the dough gets very sticky, dust it again with bread flour.  Dust the noodles with bread flour before moving them from the work surface.
8. Cook the noodles: Fill a large pot with water and bring to a rapid boil.  Lightly shake any excess flour from the noodles and add them to the boiling water.  Using cooking chopsticks, or a wooden spoon, stir the noodles to prevent them from sticking to each other.  Cook the noodles for 6 — 7 minutes, or until they are translucent and firm without a hard core.  Drain the noodles in a sieve and rinse under cold running water so they cool rapidly.
9. Once the noodles are cool enough to handle, separate them with your hands and rinse them again in cold water to make sure that all of the starch is removed.
*Rolled out dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 2 weeks.  Bring the dough to room temperature before sprinkling it with flour and continuing on with step 7.
Grandma Gates Egg Noodles:
1 C. flour
3 large egg yolks
1 large egg
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 to 1/2 cup water
Boil in  3 quarts water or add to broth and bring to a boil.
Joseph: hmmm, looks good. Thanks for sending this!

Oh and yes i like fri bread, although i have figured out how to make it allready (and yes it is very good)

WEEK 30

Well i hope the blessings of heaven come down on you and thanks for the quote.

Btw sorry for no email last week, we were having power issues haha, anyway we had zone conference which was very cool, the Missionary executive committee (Elders Oaks, Bednar and Anderson as well as Bonnie l Oscarson and a couple of Seventy) made some changes to how we report and to our Schedule that should help us move  the work along even better which is really exciting.

Elder Brown and I have continued working with all of those kids I told you about (well i hope i did) although we havnt been able to contact 3 of them. The other 3 are progressing well towards baptism and should be ready in 2 weeks though.

Also im suppose to tell you this "Hello Elders and Sisters,
I have been informed that because of the upcoming Kenya election in August, the Post Office is going to be even more stringent about packages and letters.  They will be looking for money that might be coming into the country to support different political parties.  Please tell your families not to send any cash in the mail, even small amounts.  Even companies such as DHL and FedEx may be affected.  Please let your families know when you contact them on Monday."

anyway I love you!

like did your investigators ever make it to church.  Were you able to find and teach the other other primary kids or maybe you don't know these things because you got transferred....
We just had our Priest/Laurel dinner dance.  I think it was great but let me tell you that Sister Lee sure had a couple of months of stress way beyond what she should have.  It was really hard to get the other wards leaders on board.  They just couldn't catch the vision on why to have this and its benefits.  They didn't want there kids to go to anything with a stranger.....She had a hard time even with missionary prep classes with some of them.  It has made me soooooo greatful for the stake youth program that you grew up with and the incredible leaders that you have had who were so willing to give you the best programs ever! I didn't know that there was such a difference in our surrounding stakes.  I think you got some of the best available.   You might want to take a second and thank Heavenly Father for this blessing.

I forgot to look up the "race"  I know I have heard it before.  Those things are right up my alley.  Glad  you got to celebrate it.

WEEKLY QUOTE:Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.   John 15:15

The youth theme for this year is James 1:5.  Their face to face was on the theme with Pres. Eyring and Elder Holland back at the visitors center in Palmyra.  The youth Palmyra were in charge with live feeds in London and Johannesburg.  The  questions were great but I was saddened as Pres. Eyring sat slouched in his chair and his answers were rambling and Elder Holland lovingly was keeping him on track or would take over the question.  Then after an hour and half of these questions they were concluding and went back asking Pres. Eyring for any further remarks in conclusion.  He sat up straight and bore his apostolic witness and blessed the youth.  There was no stuttering or pausing at all.  I sure hope the youth noticed the difference between the feeble old man answering questions and an apostle of the Lord bearing his apostolic witness.

His remarks are in another email because my email didn't like it.  Anyway, it is your wonderful quote for the week.

A Baptism a week....that takes a lot of faith in your mission president, obedience and hard work!  We're behind you and will pray for your success.

WEEK 35

Mom's commentary: March 6
We ran into MST. Sargent Patton (I think that's his name?) from ROTC at the store.  When we told him you were in Kenya for 2 years he just shook his head and looked at us like we were crazy...then as we told him about you being in the Hills, often without power,  boy your dad and I were just busting at the seams with pride and all he did was keep shaking his head. It was great.  Thank you so much for these special moments that make us so proud of you.

Mackenzie was in a Spanish Spelling Bee at her school.  She got 4th out of 37 contestants.  I thought she did really well.  Its fun to see her involved in these things.

Wondering if you got transferred yet.
Did your investigators ever come to church.
Did your power ever come on.....

WEEKLY QUOTE:  "As you keep the commandments and pray in faith to see the Lord's hand in your life, I PROMISE YOU that He will open your spiritual eyes even wider, and you will see more clearly that you are not alone."  Neil L. Andersen

This is a promise from an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ.  I always like to take notice when an apostle actually promises us something. Its not to be taken lightly.  I know they are sure.

Keep working hard.

MOM'S COMMENTARY March 27,

Dear son,

Its a good year to be a Gonzaga fan.  They actually made it to the Final Four  for the first time in their history.  That means right now the worse they can do is 4th place in the nation.  They actually have a good shot at their next game which would make them 2nd and were not holding our breath. This is pretty exciting.

We've had a lot of rain which has finally gotten rid of all of our snow.  Boy we've had lots of flooding all over the northwest.

The girls are on a Lacross team.  Its a new learning thing for me.  The way you carry the sticks it just seems like its meant to beat someone over the head.  That's my first impulse and the ball is just too  small to see.

Do the kids in Kenya play soccer.  I know they did in Ethiopia.

How was Zone conference.
How are your investigators coming along.  Is your baptism for April 2 still on.

WEEKLY QUOTE:
"In our battle against evil, we must always remember that we have help from both sides of the veil.  Our allies include God the Eternal Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.  Our allies also include the unseen armies of heaven.  "fear not," Elisha told a fearful young man as they faced an army of evil, "for they that be with us are more than they that be with them" (2 Kings 6:15-16) " Pres. Eyring

Be obedient, follow your mission president, love your companion and serve the great people of KNM.

Love you exceeding abundantly,
MOM

Joseph: GO ZAGS!

Thats cool that the girls are playing Lacross, They will have to teach me when i get home haha!

yes the kids play lots of soccer here, although most of the time they play with homemade balls made of plastic bags wrapped in rubber.
Zone conference was very very good, we had a change in our Schedule that i think is very nice.

our investigators our...Stubborn i guess, we have to postpone the Baptism this week, he failed to come to church this week. made me sad...

we havent been able to teach all the lessons we needed to have the Kid we are working with in Ilima baptised next week so it looks like we have to postpone that too, so we probably wont have any baptisms this transfer (it ends on the 9th) and i suspect i will be leaving.

I Love you mom!

I sent this to Elder Browns family i thought i would send it to you guys if anyone is interested in trying some kenyan food

Chopati Recipe! makes about 10 chopati's

6 cups flour
6 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
(optional) 1 tablespoon cinnamon
some oil for cooking

1.Mix all the ingredients, add about 1 1/2- 2ish cups of water and combine untill it forms a dough
1.a. you can optionally add a tablespoon or 2 of oil (or butter, shortening etc) to the dough once it is formed, rub it over the dough and kneed it a coupleof times to mix it in. This should make the dough alittle smother and helps it taste a little better (i recommend skipping this the first time)

2. divide the dough into small balls that sit in the palm of you hand, should be a little larger then a golf ball, maybe about a racketball in size. roll the balls out on a floured surface (we roll it into an oblong oval then flip it over and rotate it 90 degrees, roll it untill its close to circular and repeat until its thin enough) should be about 8 inches across and about 1/8-1/4 inch thick

3.cook each Chopati in a frying pan on high heat for about 10-15 seconds on each side, or untill it starts to look dry and forms tiny brown spots (its good to spin the Chopati to help it cook evenly). After cooking the 2nd side add a spoonful of Oil underneath the Chopati and spin/rub the chopati around the pan for about 10 seconds or until large golden spots appear. flip and repeat on the otherside.

Chopati's are very similar to tortilla's although they taste better! serve with beef stew or make a Kenyan taco with rice meet and Katchumbari! (katchumbari is tomatoes and onions chopped up together, add salt for great taste)

IN THE WORKS

The next two email I send to you will be about your name sake, ‘Joseph’ Smith. I want you to understand the following quote…
D&C 135:Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it….
I will endeavor to explain, through a number of quotes and commentary upon those quotes why Joseph is the man who has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it.” I think that the magnitude of his assigned work, and this statement, are not fully realized by most us.

PART I
Pre-mortality Joseph
President Brigham Young thus observed concerning Joseph Smith: “It was decreed in the counsels of eternity, long before the foundations of the earth were laid, that he, Joseph Smith, should be the man, in the last dispensation of this world, to bring forth the word of God to the people, and receive the fulness of the keys and power of the Priesthood of the Son of God. The Lord had his eye upon him, and upon his father, and upon his father’s father, and upon their progenitors clear back to Abraham, and from Abraham[back] to the flood [or Noah], from the flood [Noah, back] to Enoch, and from Enoch [back] to Adam. He has watched thatfamily and that blood as it has circulated from its fountain to the birth of that man. He was foreordained in eternity to preside over this last dispensation” (in Discourses of Brigham Young, sel. John A. Widtsoe, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1954, p. 108; emphasis added).
President John Taylor said: “Joseph Smith in the first place [in the pre-exsistance] was set apart by the Almighty according to the counsels of the gods in the eternal worlds, to introduce the principles of life. … God selected him for that purpose, and he fulfilled his mission and lived honorably and died honorably. I know of what I speak for I was very well acquainted with him and was with him a great deal during his life, and was with him when he died. The principles which he had, placed him in communication with the Lord, and … with the ancient apostles and prophets; such men, for instance, as AbrahamIsaacJacobNoahAdamSethEnoch, andJesus and the Father, and the apostles that lived on this continent as well as those who lived on the Asiatic continent. He seemed to be as familiar with these people as we are with one another. Why? Because he had to introduce a dispensation which was called the dispensation of the fullness of times, and it was known as such by the ancient servants of God” (in Journal of Discourses, 21:94; emphasis added).
While “the Gods” foreordained Joseph to his work in the pre-exsistance they had also foreordained many others to hold keys of the work in their assigned dispensations. Never where all the keys upon the earth at the same time (with the possible exception of the time that Christ Himself walked upon the earth in mortality). As well as the above named heavenly visitors we should note that list is only a partial list - remember, that John the Baptist came; peter, James and John came; Moroni and many others too came. Each bestowing the keys they held or doctrines that they knew, under the direction of Christ, upon Joseph.
Joseph then became the first man to hold all the necessary keys at one time. Each prophet since that time has held the keys as given to them by Joseph and passed down to our prophet today. Each of these latter-day prophets operates in the “dispensation of the fullness of time” under the direction of Joseph. Each of them then bears testimony (testament) of Josephs divine calling and work.
There is another sense in which Joseph Smith was known to the ancients: he was schooled and tutored by them during his own mortal ministry. Save Jesus Christ only, the world has never known a more competent scriptural authority than Joseph Smith. It is one thing to read a book of scripture and quite another to be personally instructed by its authors. Who among the world’s scholars and religious leaders can lay claim to having stood face to face with Adam, Enoch, Noah, Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John? Who can speak with authority about life in ancient America because of lessons learned from Nephi, Mormon, Moroni, and no doubt other ancient American Hebrews? Many of Joseph’s heavenly visitors laid their hands on his head and conferred their priesthood keys and authorities. (Elder Robert L. Millet).
The mortal work of Joseph
The mortal Joseph Smith knew the scriptures, he knew their precepts and he knew the authors, the prophets, and he knew the central character—the Lord Jesus Christ. He was prepared by them all for his work.
D&C 135:3 …In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain. He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord’s anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated!
Maybe not fully explained in this verse is that we have more scripture from Joseph then we have from any other writer of scripture. We have more priesthood authority from Joseph then ever held by man prior to him. His dispensation has lasted longer then most (except the ancients who lived hundreds of years themselves - like Adam and perhaps Noah) and Joseph’s dispensation will last until Christ comes again. Even the dispensation that began when Christ Himself started the Church during His mortal life ended in apostasy. To think that nothing can stop Joseph’s work is a testament to his work. BUT it is also a testimony of the very nature of our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ who can plan for our human failures, our use of agency and our rebellion AND STILL have the gospel prepare the way for the glorious 2nd coming and make our redemption possible.
Joseph clarified gospel truths better then anyone. There have been prophets throughout history that knew gospels doctrines but called the same doctrine by varying names. Joseph standardized much of the terminology. It leaves us with a much easier time distinguishing what scripture means and what time frame a scripture refers to.
When Christ was killed He left behind the apostolic priesthood. He also went to the ‘New World’ and organized the same thing. Over time apostasy drove the true doctrines, church and the government of Christ into the “wilderness” (Rev. 12:6) or in other words sent it right back to heaven - the world rejected it. By 100 a.d. the old world is in apostasy and by 400 a.d. the new world is too. For hundreds of years the world remained in apostasy. For more them 50 generations truth was lost from the earth. For more them 50 generations there where no authorized priesthood holders. Then in 1820 the first vision occurs. Slowly the vapors of darkness begin to be penetrated. Light comes to the world. Then in 1830 the Church is organized with priesthood power. Joseph pealed back the vapors. The rest of the story you know and now teach.
Joseph’s life was full of accomplishments. There are probably many more then those we have listed before us here.

Love,
 Dad

Mom's Commentary April 2,

My dear son Joseph,

We haven't tried chapoti yet but we will.  I loved that you sent us the recipe.
Are you ready to be transferred and a new companion?

Its been so exciting around here with Gonzaga going to the national championship.  Every where you look are Zag signs.  Every where you go are Zag shirts. Every body is all a buzz.  Its been great to see how this has bonded our community.  Strangers are suddenly friends.  Its been so much fun and I couldn't wait to share this with you...
Well now this all really pales to the announcement of a TEMPLE IN NAIROBI!!!!!! doesn't it. WOW

Did you get to watch any conference?  I really liked a couple of the seventys talks the best which surprised me.  Its usually one of the apostles.  I did like Elder Hollands talk best of the apostles I guess.

I hope you felt the spirit at such a great announcement. Its your scared responsibility and opportunity to find the people  in the KNM who are being prepared to receive the everlasting covenant. I'm sure heavens blessings will be pouring down exceeding abundantly.  I'm also certain that Satan is going to expend extra efforts to frustrate your work.  April's Ensign has an article "The War Goes On" all about Satan.  It was a good wake up call for me.  It talks about his Strategies, Lies and deceptions, Contentions, Discouragements.  He is so clever.  It made me want to take a good look into my life and try to recognize where he is using my weaknesses to creep into my life.  It has made me want to be stronger and say, "Get thee Hence Satan."

WEEKLY QUOTE:
"Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees"  William Cowper

Work hard and make Satan tremble so bad he'll think he's having a seizure.

Love you exceeding abundantly,
MOM

Joseph:I haven't been able to watch any of conference yet but we of course heard very soon after the announcement about the temple.
I cant wait to watch conference, I want to Hear President Monson say the words.

well we are out of time i will try to send more tomorrow (we are helping to download conference, maybe i can actually watch some of it)

"It has made me want to be stronger and say, 'Get thee Hence Satan.'" -I personally preferred the "Mr. Devil, Shut up"

 Dad
